چکیده

23 24 Understanding how marine ecosystems are structured and how they function is a 25 scientific challenge. Nowadays, to learn about ecosystem trophic dynamics ecologists use 26 two complementary methodological approximations, mass-balance ecosystem models and 27 isotopic tools. However, despite the wide applications of these methodologies, the 28 comparison and combination of both are still scarce. The aim of this study was to examine 29 the trophic dynamics of representative species of the South Catalan marine ecosystem 30 (North-western Mediterranean) using the Ecopath ecosystem modelling tool and the stable 31 isotope approach. By using the two methodologies we depicted the trophic position (trophic 32 level and δN values) and trophic width (omnivory index and total isotopic area) of several 33 species of fish, cephalopods, cetaceans, seabirds and one sea turtle. Our results show a clear 34 correlation between the trophic levels estimated by the Ecopath model and the N values, 35 which validate the trophic position of several species in the study area and indicate that both 36 methodologies are useful to determine the trophic position of marine species in 37 Mediterranean marine food webs. In contrast, the two estimators of trophic width (the 38 omnivore index and the total isotopic area) were not strongly related, since the relationship 39 between modelling and stable isotope results was evident only for some species. Further 40 comparisons of trophic width calculated in other marine food webs may provide a better 41 understanding of our results and validate the accuracy of both methodological approaches to 42 calculate trophic width. 43 44

The contribution of different food sources to the diet of Parasesarma persicum Naderloo and Schubart 2010 in the mangrove ecosystem of Hara Biosphere Reserve; a stable isotope approach

The current study aimed to determine the isotopic composition of different food sources and their contribution to the diet of Parasesarma persicum inhibiting a mangrove ecosystem in the Persian Gulf. The potential food sources, i.e., Avicennia marina green and yellow leaves, Particulate Organic Matter (POM), Microphytobenthos (MPB), and Sediment Organic Matter (SOM) were collected for stable is...

Modelling the Mediterranean marine ecosystem as a whole: addressing the challenge of complexity

An ecosystem modelling approach was used to understand and assess the Mediterranean marine ecosystem structure and function as a whole. In particular, 2 food web models for the 1950s and 2000s were built to investigate: (1) the main structural and functional characteristics of the Mediterranean food web during these 2 time periods; (2) the key species/functional groups and interactions; (3) the...

Species distribution modelling of invasive alien species; Pterois miles for current distribution and future suitable habitats

The present study aims to predict the potential geographic distribution and future expansion of invasive alien lionfish (Pterois miles) with ecological niche modelling along the Mediterranean Sea. The primary data consisted of occurrence points of P. miles in the Mediterranean and marine climatic data layers were collected from global databases. All the used models run 100% su...

Historical changes of the Mediterranean Sea ecosystem: modelling the role and impact of primary productivity and fisheries changes over time

The Mediterranean Sea has been defined "under siege" because of intense pressures from multiple human activities; yet there is still insufficient information on the cumulative impact of these stressors on the ecosystem and its resources. We evaluate how the historical (1950-2011) trends of various ecosystems groups/species have been impacted by changes in primary productivity (PP) combined with...

Species diversity of fish in the Sanandaj Azad Dam ecosystem

Fish sampling was conducted to evaluate the species diversity of fish in 4 stations in Sanandaj Azad dam ecosystem seasonally from summer of 2017 to spring of 2018. A total of 1057 fish were caught in 12 species, of which more than 80% were caught in the lake behind the dam. The Cyprinidae family had 11 species with the most species diversity and only Sasanidus kermanshahensis belonged to the N...
